Ozonation is one of the most effective and most economical methods for removal of trace organic substances in wastewater. The oxidation results in reasonable operating conditions but not to mineralization but to partially oxidized transformation products. What substances are formed under what conditions and whether these substances also have a human toxicological or ecotoxicological effect, was little examined so far. For the overall assessment of ozonation in advanced wastewater treatment, such knowledge is indispensable.
The project aims to close these gaps in knowledge by an assessment of large-scale operations of wastewater treatment with ozone. Studies are performed at three newly installed large-scale wastewater treatment plants with ozonation.
The second phase of this project will characterise toxicological relevant tranformation products by effect directed analysis. Furthermore, it investigates the efficiency of different post-treatments to reduce these tranformation products.
